Self Publishing with Love Of Books

Lyndon Sayer-Jones

My wife, the bridal designer Rhonda Hemmingway, had written a book called Secrets and Confessions of a Wedding Dress Designer. After checking all the competition we found Love of Books to be easily the most competitive.

As the book was a deluxe hardcover A4 sized coffee table style, with 365 pages and more than 250 photographs with a sealed section and silver foiled highlights on the cover, it was very complex to design and print. Not once did Julie or her team falter to deliver exactly what we wanted with great formatting design ideas, but it was achieved promptly and with good humour.

The resulting publication is so impressive that we just received a good order from the biggest retailer of books in Australasia, Dymocks (145+ shops). The book will go into profit next month, recovering all our print and marketing costs. We are thrilled.

We will definitely use Love of Books for the reprints (as well as a children’s book we are also working on).
I cannot praise Love of Books too much as they really are very good and highly skilled, which is all the more impressive when you consider their quote was the best we obtained from the 8 publisher’s we approached.

Why so many people are choosing to self-publish?

The eBook trend is on the increase as Baby Boomers, new authors, businesses, and people from all walks of life choose the self-publishing route. Many authors tire of the difficulty of achieving success through the traditional publishing method.
Australians are increasingly choosing eBook as a viable method to get their books published. Many authors are adopting this method of publishing as it allows more control for the reader, and avoids constant rejection from traditional publishers! This is evidenced by the many websites that are emerging to help self-publishers bring their dream book to reality.

Another reason Australians are increasingly choosing eBook is because of demographic and lifestyle changes. With Baby Boomers coming to the end of their working careers, many are choosing to work from home. As a result, increased spare time allows them to invest time into writing. Their valuable life experiences can be compiled into a beautiful self-published book.

Some new authors enjoy taking the time to complete their family history book. Some create novels or children’s books. Some of these treasured manuscripts were put on hold during their early years due to busy life and or family commitments. Retired business men and women create Self-publishing packed with real life experiences learned along their life journey. These books become valuable learning tools for the new business generation.

For the author, there are many avenues nowadays that can help them with the entire self-publishing process. From the book printing, fomatting/typesetting, Ebook right through to promoting and selling their books. Perhaps even better than the publishing houses can in many cases. The internet, if used properly, can instantly help authors sell their books globally. What’s more, they usually receive a higher percentage profit of the sale of each sold book.

The styles of books available are hardcover, book printing as digitally printed paperback style for print on demand authors or Ebook style.

I have known authors that have received acceptance of their manuscript from the traditional publishing houses after years of waiting only to reject offers submitted to them. Some feel that the royalty offers of a few cents per book sale is not justified. Some feel that the loss of rights to their hard work and restrictions on their control over the work is too much to bear. Secondly, traditional publishers have made it so hard for authors to get their book published. It is often not a very pleasant experience. For every manuscript that is accepted, there are 99 that are rejected.
