Some of our authors get thousands of dollars paid in book royalties each year, and yet some have very little to shout about.

1) Book is poorly written
Goes without saying, a poorly written book without good structure and proper proofreading will have little chance of succeeding in the marketplace. The solution? Plan your book structure out before you write it and make sure you get your book proofread by professionals.
2) Cover Doesn’t Grab Attention
That’s why you should invest a in a simple eye catching cover design. It is one of the key factors in attracting potential readers to your book. You generally have about 8 seconds to grab the attention of your prospective readers. Make sure your cover looks great.
3) The Price Ain’t Right
This is especially important with eBooks. If you price your book too high, no one is going to give your book a second look. At the same time, some of our authors have highly priced books in certain niche markets yet do very well. So as a general rule of thumb, the wider your book audience, the cheaper it has to be. The more niched and targeted your book is, the higher you can price it.
The best thing to do? Spend a few minutes on Amazon.com and have a look at other bestselling books in your genre that you’re competing with…what are their pricing their books at?Then price your book accordingly.
4) Your Blurb
Your book blurb, or the short description about your book is one of the key things to convert interested prospects into buying readers. Give as much as possible about your book, and leave them hanging for more. If you have a non-fiction book, make sure you can communicate the benefits of reading your book. For example: overcome snoring, have better relationship with your children, make a million dollars in 7 years in stocks etc.
5) No Personal Marketing Effort
Sadly, most authors think that once the book is published, their work is done. Successful authors know that is just the beginning of it. They get on radio shows, write articles for their local rag, write guest blog posts, speak at local associations, and develop relationships with bookstores…. the list goes on.
The point is that authors who treat their book as a business have an infinitely higher possibility of success. It is a rarity that any author had solely depended on their publisher to achieve the success they had. Household names today like John Grisham, JK Rowling and Robert Kiyosaki all had to work hard to promote their books initially. If you want to be a successful
author, you’ll need the same commitment.
It goes without saying that your title and subtitle on the cover is just as important.
