From 2008 to 2017, I had the privilege of building and operating Love of Books, an Australian publishing business dedicated to supporting authors throughout the book publishing journey.
Known to many authors as Julie McGregor, my husband John and I founded Love of Books from humble beginnings, commencing in my own garage with little more than determination, a passion for books, and a strong belief that aspiring writers deserved access to honest, affordable, and professional publishing services. After working as an employee in several publishing houses, I recognised a need for more personalised care and support within the industry. Running my own business gave me the freedom to spend genuine time with authors, listening to their stories, answering their questions, and guiding them through the publishing process without watching the clock. Those conversations were never a burden. In fact, they were one of the most enjoyable and rewarding parts of my work, and many authors became valued friends over the years.
What began as a small venture grew steadily into a respected resource for Australian authors seeking guidance with self-publishing, manuscript preparation, editing and proofreading, book formatting, cover design, ISBN registration, book printing, and independent publishing solutions.
The early years required long days, late nights, and countless hours of hard work. Every enquiry was answered personally, every manuscript was treated with care, and every author received individual support. There were no large corporate resources behind Love of Books, only a commitment to helping writers navigate the publishing process with confidence and clarity.
Over time, authors began recommending Love of Books to friends, family members, colleagues, and fellow writers. Through word-of-mouth referrals and a reputation for personalised author support, the business continued to grow, assisting over 1,700 writers across Australia in bringing their books to life.
As a publishing consultant and publisher, my goal was never simply to help produce books. It was to provide clear publishing guidance, practical advice, and honest support that empowered authors to make informed decisions about their work and their publishing future.
Every manuscript represented a unique story, a personal achievement, and often years of dedication. Whether working with first-time writers, business professionals, memoirists, family historians, children's authors, or experienced independent publishers, I considered it a privilege to help transform ideas into professionally published books.
